The real issue, though, is deliverability: without SPF, DKIM and DMARC records your mail quietly lands in spam and you never find out. What SPF, DKIM and DMARC do

All three are DNS records added to your domain and all three answer one question: was this message really sent by the owner of this domain? SPF lists which servers may send on your behalf. DKIM adds a signature to the message that cannot be forged. DMARC tells the receiving server what to do when the first two do not hold. Without them two things happen at once: your legitimate mail lands in spam, and nothing stops someone sending fake mail in your name.

Businesses that have just registered a domain, anyone moving from a free mailbox to a proper address, and anyone who has noticed their mail is not reaching customers.

What happens to the old mail

Messages and contacts from the old account are moved across, and a forwarding rule is left on the old address. You do not have to write to everyone individually to say your address has changed.

The domain side

Setup needs access to the domain's DNS records. If you do not have a domain yet, or it sits somewhere else, running this alongside domain and SSL setup is more practical.
